What happened to Kate Wallis in Cruel Summer?

Kate Wallis, a fictional character in Cruel Summer season 1, is a beautiful high school student with a life that everyone envies. In 1993, she had everything.

She was Skylin’s prettiest and most popular girl and one of Skylin High’s top students. Additionally, she was dating handsome guy Jamie Henson and the couple went public with their affection.

However, one day, Kate mysteriously disappears. She voluntarily went to Martin Harris, initially to hide from her family. She spent most of her time moving freely around the house.

But later, Harris locked her up the basement and abused Kate. Jeannette Turner is another recurring character on the show. She’s a lovable nerd who admires Kate’s life from afar.

In the summer of 1994, Jeannette and her friends, Mallory Higgins and Vince Fuller, dare to steal new assistant manager Martin Harris’ house key and sneak out to play hide and seek. But, Jeanatte’s friends were unaware that she continued to sneak into the house for the next two years.

At one point, Jeanette learns that Kate is confined to the Harris house. But she did nothing to help him as she prioritized her new life, which makes her the true antagonist of the series.

After his recusal, Kate accuses Jeanette of keeping her secret. Jeanette later sues Kate for defamation.

When news of Kate Wallis’ rescue appears during the news, Jeannet’s family learns that Martin Harris has been shot and killed during a standoff.

Jeanette and Kate agree to meet at Martin Harris’s house between court hearings. They discuss their issues and Jeanette reveals that Mallory was the one who saw Kate in Harris’ house.

Kate invites Jeanette to the basement, which triggers her memory. She’s calling back how she shot the assistant director with the gun called Annabelle.

The female lead tells Jeanette that she felt crippled and guilty for loving, hating, and killing him. She admitted to calling the cops in the morning.

Although Kate acknowledges that she initially wanted to interpret Martin Harris’ death as a shooting, she later realizes that was wrong.

Martin Harris had gone to the basement to kill himself but couldn’t and dropped his gun. Kate saw a chance and shot him.

Although it was plotted in the 1990s, it’s surprising that the police couldn’t tell the difference between a man who was just shot and a man who was killed hours earlier.
