Michael John Ahern AO FTSE was a Queensland National Party politician who was Premier of Queensland from December 1987 to September 1989. He was born on 2 June 1942, on Maleny, Queensland, Australia.

After a long career in the government of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Ahern became his successor amid the controversy caused by the Fitzgerald Inquiry into official corruption. Ahern’s consensus style and political moderation contrasted strongly with Bjelke-Petersen’s leadership, but he could not escape the division and strife caused by his predecessor’s downfall.

Obituary

His family said Ahern died peacefully at his home in Caloundra surrounded by his wife and five children.
“Mike was passionate about making life better for all Queenslanders,” the family said.

“He often fought against the will of his peers for the greater good of the people.
“This was most evident when he protected the state’s Indigenous community from the AIDS virus when he was health minister in the ’80s.
“He defied the premier of the day to order blood tests on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population and stop an epidemic and save hundreds of lives.”
