Niger Delta high-profile singer Ikesima Brown and five members of the popular Ijaw band, Chief Barrister Smooth, have died in a horrific car crash.
It is known that the incident happened on Sunday, June 11, 2023, while the band members were traveling from Warri to Abuja for a performance.
The band was on their way to a concert when their bus collided with a gas tank truck along the Abuja/Lokoja highway.
It is known that the ill-fated car carrying the famous band was rented by the state government to perform at the swearing-in ceremony of members of Parliament in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to a witness, the band members were boarding a train from Warri to Kogi and were on their way to Abuja when the Toyota Sienna they were traveling in crashed into a fuel tanker, leading to the their death.
Those who have died have been identified as Sheriff Joseph Ekeremieye, Ikesima Brown, Ebis Awiki, Sololo, Tuku Eniekebi, and one other person.
The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, expressed his deep sadness over the two accidents that claimed the lives of no less than 10 Ijaw indigenous people.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Monday, Diri described the tragic incident as a dark Sunday for Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation.
Governor Bayelsa also offered his condolences to the families of the deceased and Attorney Smooth, acknowledging that the deaths of young individuals who are positively impacting lives through their musical talents is a Great loss to the state.
He say,
“In an accident along the Kogi-Abuja Road, six band members of famous Ijaw musician, Lawyer Smooth, died, while another accident along the Kwale-Asaba highway in Delta State claimed their lives. the lives of four supporters of Queen Bayelsa. Football club.
“On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who have passed away. I also share with the band’s frontman, Attorney Smooth. These are very unfortunate and sad incidents that have claimed the lives of our active young people.
“It is a great loss to our state and the nation of Ijaw that these young talents and family breadwinners who were pursuing their passions have suddenly passed away. I pray that God comforts the families for the painful loss they have suffered. I also pray for the healing of the injured and a speedy recovery.”
