A 21-year-old man charged before the Odigbo Magistrates Court in Ondo State escaped from the facility after the judge ordered remand.
At the trial on Monday, June 5, defendant Segun Akala, who was accused of theft, escaped from the courthouse through a window while still in handcuffs.
Judge DO Ogunfuyi ordered his detention at the Okitipupa Correctional Center.
However, before being sent to the correctional facility, the defendant ran into a nearby bush and police officers on the court premises attempted to arrest him.
Police prosecutor Usifo James previously told the court that Akala committed the crime on May 27, 2023, at Aipon Road in the Odigbo Local Council Area of Ondo State.
He said the suspect stole a chainsaw, chainsaw chain and a pullover, all worth N 300,000, belonging to an Akintan Akintade.
Defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecutor, the offense was contrary to Section 390 (9) of the Penal Code, Cap. 37 Law of the Nigerian Ondo State 2006.
James begged the court to adjourn so he could study the case files and prepare his witnesses for the trial.
In his ruling, Judge Ogunfuyi granted the defendant a bail of N100,000 with two bailiffs of the same amount.
He adjourned the case until June 23, 2023.
