Banker arrested for stealing deceased customers’ N50 million to buy iPhone 14, Dubai ticket


A 25-year-old banker has been arrested by Ghana Police for allegedly stealing around 1.2 million Ghc (N50 million) from the bank accounts of two customers.

Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, a contract worker at one of Ghana’s largest banks, allegedly took money from a judge and a former Inspector General of Police, both deceased.

According to police, the suspect transferred some money to his own account at another bank, the accounts of his 17 associates in various banks, and their mobile money accounts.

He was also charged with using It was obtained that Afriyie used some money to buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Toyota Camry, and also planned to sneak with his girlfriend to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates after buying plane tickets.

But intelligence-based security agents took action and arrested Afriyie at Kotoka International Airport on June 4, 2023.

The alleged person made the fraudulent transactions by discreetly recording his boss using her mobile phone as she entered her password, and then he examined the clip to identify the password she is using.

Afriyie then transferred the money from the customer’s account within two months.

Several of his accomplices were later arrested and brought before the court and remanded in custody before they were finally released on bail.

Afriyie was charged with several counts, including conspiracy and theft, along with several of his aides.

He is the only suspect facing additional charges of falsifying accounts and forging other documents, bringing the total number of charges against him to 13, all of which pleaded not guilty.

He is scheduled to appear again before the court chaired by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh on June 16, 2023.
